Acclaim lowers Q3 expectations on PlayStation delay
NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Citing a delay in shipping its latest PlayStation video game, Acclaim Entertainment Inc. (NasdaqSC:AKLM - news) said third-quarter earnings would trail expectations.

The company said shipment of ``Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge'' for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation2 computer entertainment system, which it had expected to ship in North America during the quarter ended June 2, has been delayed until June 6, due to manufacturing delays.

``As a result of the delay, revenue from the title will be shifted from the company's third to the fourth quarter,'' said Gerard Agoglia, Chief Financial Officer. He said Acclaim anticipates the shift in revenue will result in ``break even or small loss on an operating basis in the third quarter.''

The two analysts reporting Acclaim expectations to Thomson Financial/First Call had both expected the company to earn 2 cents a share in the third quarter compared to a loss of 88 cents a year earlier.

However, Agoglia continued, Acclaim anticipates reporting a profit in the third quarter, taking into account the early retirement of $13.9 million of its 10 percent convertible notes during the period. This note retirement by the company resulted in a gain of $7.1 million."

``The company expects to be profitable in the fourth quarter, as well as the fiscal year ending August 31,'' added Agoglia.
