Brian,

Are you saying that there IS some $10B company with no
advertising or commercials.....?

I doubt that there is, but if there is I would be interested to know who they are.

I don't think, however, that any of us objecting to the AMAT mass market advertising are objecting to advertising, per se, but rather to the type of advertising, and its relevance to AMAT's business.

Namaste!

Jim

Can ANYONE name me 1, that is ONE, company with 10B in sales with no advertising or commercials?

I cannot not but...what does that have to do with AMAT? They've used print advertising for years. Can you name one member of the general public who, having never heard of AMAT previously, will now order a deposition system? :-)

Brian:

Let's turn your question around: Can you name one company other than AMAT with over $10B in exclusively non-consumer annual sales which does advertise on television? Few companies that big don't have some consumer sales (or consumer-influenced sales). For instance, a company like GE gets spill-over consumer benefits from advertising its jet engines, since people buy refrigerators, and may have a preference in which planes they fly (people who fly the most have definite ideas on what planes they prefer).

So there are few companies in the category of > $10B in exclusively non-consumer annual sales. Of those that fit this category, I don't recall seeing advertisements from the following companies on television:

Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL)
Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE:ITW)
Mirant Corporation (NYSE:MIR)

I remain of the opinion that the AMAT advertising campaign was unwise.
