FedEx, UPS, Airborne.... and also, most recently, the Internet. The USPS is losing business at a pretty good clip.

USPS

Well USPS has quite a bit of competition for packages!

Lots of competition for mail--this for example!

If a person is going to decide HOW they are going to send
something to someone, advertising may influence the
decision.

Public mass advertising makes sense for a consumer-oriented company.
