how long it will take from finding the gene to getting approval for an effective drug

As you would be talking a small-molecule drug here, I'd guess seven/eight years if everything went perfectly. More realistically, a decade or more. Remember they may have a gene, but they don't yet even have a drug target, let alone a drug candidate.

Maybe some of the scientist-types could give their guesses.
