I don't know if it's really ever possible to compare from one time frame to another, but of course it's irresistible to try to make sense of the future by examining the past.

Here's a fun one - October, 1987. No one's ever really explained it, although many have tried.

Nor are are we comparing apples to apples when extrapolating the claim that equities always outperform other asset classes....
