The reason the force is less easily seen is due to the opposing forces which contain it. In many countries it is not contained. In some countries it is. History has shown us the horror of religious dominance when the bridle was off the horse.

Historically those with a lot of power have tended to abuse others with it. In the past religon's frequently held great power. This is less true then it used to be. In Afghanistan you basically have a theocracy, and in countries like Iran the religious rulers have a lot of power, but in most of the world the power of religious orginizations has declined a great deal. The power they still have is mainly that of influenceing people who are not directly under their control. In the past they frequently had direct control over a lot of people. They can still influence leaders but in the past they often were the leaders.
