HP Leads in Worldwide Home PC Sales

New Market Research Shows Hewlett-Packard Is Leader in Worldwide Sales of Home PCs

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- New market research from International Data Corp. shows Hewlett-Packard Co. as the worldwide leader in sales of home desktop computers for the first time.

HP surpassed Compaq Computer Corp. in the first quarter despite losing market share overall.

HP sold 953,000 home PCs to Compaq's 857,000, giving HP 10.3 percent of the market and Compaq 9.3 percent, according to Roger Kay, IDC's director of client computing. In the previous quarter, HP had 11.3 percent and Compaq had 11.9 percent.

Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news) was third in the home PC market in the first quarter, with 6.7 percent. The Fujitsu-Siemens joint venture had 5.2 percent and Dell Computer Corp. was fifth at 4.8 percent.

Kay said Dell's position was impressive because the Round Rock, Texas-based PC maker ``has kind of come from nowhere in the consumer business.'' Counting home and office markets, Dell remains the No. 1 seller of PCs in the world
