Not that I want to reduce the question to a cost but I have a query. When you say it costs a million or what ever to execute someone are you saying that the actual execution costs that much or the whole process of investigation, trial, appeals and execution combined. Because the process would be the same (except for the actual needle injection) whether put in prison or executed.

I believe the average cost of keeping someone in prison is about $20,000 a year.

But the avg cost for a maximum security inmate is probably higher. Also some of the appeals that happen in cases when the death penalty is a possibility would still happen.

Ticket sales for the executions would make the entire thing profitable. Not to mention t.v. rights, t-shirts, coffee mugs, posters....
