To: redwood who wrote (52110 ) 6/6/2001 7:41:33 PM From: WhatsUpWithThat Respond to of 57584 <g> We'll have to be careful not to turn out too many non-stock posts tonight, but one more from me and I'll have said everything I can think of to say that might be worth reading... You're right, of course, it's a tremendously strong physical - and mental - addiction, and I have a great deal of sympathy for those trying to break the habit. However, people do quit. Every day. Personal experience I'm short on, because I'm physically allergic to smoking, but my mother quit, my brother quit, many of my friends quit...my dad has chosen not to, and my brother-in-law died of multiple cancers a year ago, inarguably as a result of his heavy smoking. People quit other, arguably more difficult, addictions all the time. And anyone who started in the last (at least) ten years gets exceedingly little sympathy from me because both the health risks and the addictive qualities were well known when they started. So my 25 year-old nephew gets zero sympathy from me, either for his addiction or for any health effects he suffers if he doesn't kick the habit. And if it's a matter of assigning blame for continuing to make an addictive, harmful, product available, the government has to shoulder a significant portion of that blame. Funny how they don't, though. There are three parties with responsibility here, IMO. Let's have all three stand up to it. Anyway... Back to the really interesting stuff here, and sorry all the OT stuff. All the best WUWT ps "cause the bible says so"? Not all moral arguments spring from a religious source (if you think it's relevant, I'm agnostic). Moreover, I'm not (at least trying to be) self-righteous. I screw up lots (like in investing, sadly)...but I try to take responsibility for my decisions.
