Thanks to everybody for the suggestions on how to fix my modem hardware conflict. I finally broke down and took the machine to a local shop and got it fixed. The technician said he had to rename the PCI Serial Controller so he could add a driver for it.
At any rate, it works now. Thanks again.
Clay.

hi tc

this is follow up on the wait for zonealarm support to respond to my email request for help when i couldn't get za and norton personal firewall to load together on win95 without blue screens of death....

my request for help was sent out on 5/26 and a reply received on 6/5.... 10 days later. sure they're busy (what with the latest version release), and sure they're free for individual users. so i'm not really complaining so much as i am reporting.

rather than wait for za, i was able to figure out a fix here on our thread in a matter of a couple of days. i thought i was waiting for their reply, but instead, i kept playing with things until eventually your suggestion worked.

btw, za's advice was a generic form response (it included instructions for win95, win98 and win2000) suggesting that i uninstall and then reinstall their product.

i'd be happy to share my findings with them, but since they took so long and answered so broadly (responding to none of the specifics in my email), i'm not too motivated to do so. seems like it would be a waste of my time, and they probably wouldn't care anyway.

i just dig that i got it running right and in a timely manner with the help of this thread!

:)

mark

tc,

Thanks for your suggestions. It's beginning to seem as if Mitch's suggestion was the only one that will work... get a new computer!!

I routinely clear my cache (as you described)... often ever half hour... along with the history. Just tried it again and it still didn't help. I spoke with Mindspring tech support last night and they had me reconfigure some things (he was going so fast I couldn't write it down), but that didn't help. He then suggested I download Internet Explorer 5.5 with SP1 and internet tools and he walked me to the site and stayed with me until the download was started. Unfortunately this also didn't help. I then rebooted, used End-It-All and went to Norton SystemWorks and ran Win Doctor. It came up with 14 errors... mostly Dlls. I let it fix itself (it deleted the entries) and I then did a scan disk using Disk Doctor and then defragmented the disk and rebooted. This time I could dial-in, but couldn't get Outlook Express or Internet Explorer to work at all on any sites. I then went back to Norton Win Doctor and undid the changes I had just made and I'm back to square one. I can get to most sites, but not www.freerealtime or www.classmates.com and I get frequent crashes when clicking on certain links. I can almost tell when the crash is going to occur as the site will start to open and the hard disk will start to grind away and then crash and reboot. When I try to get to the two sites mentioned above, the lights on my external modem don't even flicker and I end up with a HTTP 400 (bad request) message.

I'm lost!!! If anyone has any suggestions (besides running out and buying a new computer) I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks,

Marty
