I suggest you review the following before making any decision.....the procedures for upgrading are pretty well defined and should answer most questions you have:

microsoft.com

Good Luck!

Regards, Sapper

PS: Apparently Windows 98 still outsells other OSs in my neck of the woods...that's enough to convince me not to consider upgrading!! <ggg>

besides the os migration, i did offer a few other suggestions. if you are not comfortable installing a new os, then by all means don't do it. my suggestion was chiefly based on the fact that it is fairly common knowledge that win2000pro is a much more stable os than win98.

"Is it true that one can't simply install 2k over 98 and expect things to work?"

i wouldn't say that. but i have no personal experience upgrading from w98 to w2k. i partitioned my hd and installed w2k clean on a separate partition.

:)

Hi Ken,

<<Is it true that one can't simply install 2k over 98 and expect things to work?>>

I've done it on two machines with no problems. In fact, it made my NEC Z1 so much more stable that I'm still running it a year later (It's the only one of 10 computers that has not been reformatted in the last year). That said; I highly recommend a full backup first. Two machines is a less than optimal sampling pool for statistical purposes :)

On my Win3.1 to Win95 upgrades a number of years ago, it used to run about 1/2 success and 1/2 trashed - install again from scratch.

Good luck,
Steve
