Frank, I once again feel the need to gently but firmly chide your misspoken conclusions. Your tenet that Bre-X reduced gold mining/exploration et al, to some "new" public perception / participation level as only for the feeble minded...couldn't be further from the truth.

The truth is...all of us in the gold mining business are considered a bit "tetched" in the head. And it's been this way in USA-America for at least 150 years since the first speck was supposedly found at Sutter's Mill in the log millraces. The poor bloke who found the nugget about 1/2 the size of a smashed greenpea almost didn't tell anyone about it, and certainly didn't mention it for a good long time because it was such a goofy find. His experience way back when would be the modern equivalent of picking up a piece of busted pop bottle glass off of a conveyor belt full of new crop, Idaho potatoes and taking it to DeBeers for Show 'n Tell.

Anyhow, if you personally came to the "we miners are a funny(peculiar...not funny haha) lot" post Bre-X SLANTED news coverage during the time it was most inconvenient for a huge gold deposit to surface during the era of CB gold dishoarding for stupid financial reasons, then you, my dear Frank, are the one joining an already large throng of the previously so-convinced.

Me? Well, the throng can laugh all they want...I wouldn't trade placer or lode mining or my $20 per oz gold recycling version of gold mining for all the corner offices in the world. There's just NOTHING like finding gold in milling chute, on in the dredge, or in the gold pan, or in the furnace...NOTHING LIKE IT AT ALL...

Would you stoop over and pick up a (new or old-doesn't matter) Silver Dollar on the sidewalk or in a parking lot?
We goldminers stoop over and pick up gold ALL THE TIME, and we call it "fun" and think that anyone who doesn't understand why we do it or the thrill that never gets old are the "tetched ones<grin>"

...and to top it all off,
we get to get dirty and nobody yells at us,
and we get to and wear funny clothes and hats
and we talk funny, about things like goobers and pickers and flakes and adits and drifts and gangue and schist and gossans,
BUT NOBODY is laughing or thinks twice about it out here.
