If they kept the guy locked up for the rest of his life, wouldn't that have prevented the murders too?

There was not enough information in the segment for me to get any sense at all about how the study reached its conclusions. The author of the study was briefly interviewed and he certainly appeared to be a serious scholar. That impression was about all I came away with. If he he can make a good case for eight lives per execution, I'd have to rethink my position.

Let me add that the segment was over so quickly that I'm not sure now whether they were talking about eight per execution or eight per death sentence.

I also wonder why the story isn't more widely reported.
