RadioShack reported that wireless units were up mid-teens YoY for the month of May. Well, I did my part to help in June. Yesterday, I bought my little brother (as in Big Brothers/Big Sisters) a MOT CDMA phone as a middle school graduation gift. I bought it on a VZ prepaid service plan at Radioshack for $100. It came with 190 minutes included and the most expensive option for additional minutes cost 33 cents per minute. Reason I post this (so as not to get into trouble) is that I did some comparison shopping before I chose the VZ-MOT deal. Prepaid Cingular deal with an ERICY phone was $150, and I stopped there. AT&T Wireless offered an ERICY phone for $100 but it came with 50 minutes that cost $30. This works out to 60 cents a minute - or 82% more than VZ! Given how my little brother would use the phone, I was very willing to buy a non-CDMA phone if the cost made sense. And, frankly, I did not expect VZ to be the lowest cost option (note Sprint does not offer a prepaid phone deal, at least not through Radioshack). Are we beginning to see the impact of greater spectral efficiency allowing VZ (and Sprint) to undercut Cingular and AWE price-wise?
