Re: You are so at ease blaming Israel for these events, you forget that it was Egypt, not Israel, that demanded the removal of the UN forces from the buffer zone in Sinai, once again in violation of the 1956 armistice, thus effectively declaring the armistice agreement null and void and declaring war against Israel, that precipitated their demise. Hussein, if he wanted, could have stayed out.

Likewise, the whole mess could have been avoided if Jewish immigrants had stayed home --in Russia, in Europe, wherever.

East Jerusalem is the key to any viable, long-lasting peace... Of course, I'm not naive about how the Arab sovereignty over the Eastern part of the city will wind up --just look at what happened in Sarajevo, Pristina, etc. After years of hatred and bloodshed, Jewish dwellers will likely "feel the heat" and, somehow, be pushed across the city's demarcation line. On the other hand, the Palestinians will have to comply with the international legal framework that provides for the protection of minorities. I believe that both Europe and the US will exert the strongest pressure over the Palestinian leadership to guarantee the rights of East Jerusalem's Jewish constituency. So, just as today's Israel harbours Arab-Israeli (second-class) citizens, tomorrow's Palestine will have its Jewish-Palestinian (first-class) citizens....
