ES is the "small" S&P 500 futures contract. FYI, NQ is the "small" NDX 100 futures contract.

Some traders prefer trading index futures due to simplicity, leverage, liquidity, and flexibility (such as short on a downtick). Larger players sometimes use futures as part of hedging strategies.

More info on ES/SP and NQ/ND can be found on the CME web site at: cme.com and all sorts of info here: cme.com
