US Treasury must clarify dollar policy - trade group

WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department must clarify its policy on the dollar to ensure that it is not endorsing a strong dollar regardless of fundamentals, a powerful trade group said in a letter released
on Thursday. The letter to Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill also said that the dollar policy should be backed by a commitment to cooperating in foreign exchange markets as appropriate. ``In our view, a clarification of Treasury policy is in order, to be certain that it is not seen as endorsing an ever strong dollar irrespective of the economic fundamentals,'' said the letter, which was written by Jerry Jasinowski, President of the National Association of Manufacturers, on behalf of U.S. trade groups. The manufacturers also called on the Treasury not to condone currency manipulation by trading partners seeking to make their exports more competitive. Earlier on Thursday, the Treasury department told Reuters that it stands by its strong dollar policy as Treasury Secretary O'Neill believes American businesses can be successful in spite of the strong dollar.
