It looks like you're starting to get it. AMD has had a process in production for a year and a half that is close to what Intel is bringing up next month. 6 months from now, AMD will be bringing on line a production process that won't be matched by Intel for another 1 1/2 years.

Dan, I'm going to have to completely disagree with you here. Your posts have no basis in fact, and your conclusions are laughable. AMD has only recently moved to 0.13 micron-like gate lengths. At release their 0.18 mircon process gate lengths were pretty much the same as Intel's, the top-tier industry standard of ~100nm if memory serves. Intel has not moved appreciably from that length to obtain high speeds on P4, but AMD has moved from that length in order to keep the K7 core competitive. That means they've already used up a huge amount of the bang that you get from going to a 0.13 micron process just to keep their 0.18 micron process competitive. Now Intel is getting ready to up the ante and move fully to the 0.13 micron node... well ahead of AMD. That puts AMD behind the proverbial 8-ball.

To put a finer point on it...

AMD hybrid 0.13/0.18 is barely keeping pace with Intel 0.18.
Intel moves to 0.13 starting roughly now, AMD doesn't start until the end of the year.
AMD 0.13 won't be able to keep up with Intel 0.13 because they've already used up most of the bang of going to the new process.
AMD 0.13 + SOI MAY redress the imbalance, but not until 2H of 02.
By 1H of 03, Intel will be moving to 0.10 micron, all on 300mm.
Checkmate.
