Weakness in financials is weighing on the market, but the evil semis are holding like a rock. Ugh! Turning out to be another really dull day outside of semiland.
Lots of attention being paid to the collapse in implied volatility. Not only is the VIX down 47% from its recent high, its 20-week SMA is close to crossing its 40-week SMA. The last time that happened was the week of Aug 25, one week before the NDX’s secondary top. Not enough history to look at the QQV using the same time frame, but its 20-day SMA crossed the 50-day on May 3 and the NDX hasn’t gone anywhere since then. The prior cross was on Jan. 24, the top of the January move. Something to think about.
