I think that's really healthy.

Still, there are a couple of things about moderated threads that make me uncomfortable. One is that it hurts to be excluded. It even hurts to be excluded from something that you don't want anything to do with. When the moderator says "goodby," it's a slap in the face and it stings, even if only for a moment.

The other thing is that people don't like unfairness and they particularly don't like unfairness when it's directed at them. The role of the moderator is inherently arbitrary and capricious. That doesn't mean that the moderator will behave badly, but he could if he wanted to. When people get booted, sometimes they don't understand why and it's natural to assume you've been unfairly treated.

That's not to say we shouldn't have moderated threads. But you said you don't understand why people objet so I offer a couple of reasons.

Some people also raise a free speech issue. I don't buy that in this context.
