Ron, I have ridden mass transit to work for the past 15 years, crossing the Bay every day from Oakland to SF on BART. Yes, I have on occasion seen folks perfectly capable of carrying on conversations with no need of a second person, and have seen folks I wouldnt want to cross. But in my 15 years I have never seen an act of violence on either BART or the local bus system. Yeah, I know that it happens, but folks also get shot driving on the freeway, and I imagine you are probably more likely to be injured in a car accident commuting every day than you are riding the train. And in my case, anyway, I am far less stressed out than I would be if I fought Bay Area traffic for 2-3 hours every day.

The situation may be worse for women, but the idea that trains or buses carry nothing but "wierdos and freaks" is way overblown, unless you folks live on a different train and bus line than me, or travel at far different hours. The vast majority of folks I see are just trying to get back and forth to work.
