Widespread rubber smuggling along the Thai-Malaysian border is raising cries from the Thai rubber industry, which is urging a government crack down. Almost half a million tons of Thai rubber were illegally smuggled into Malaysia in 2000. The leading cause for the smuggling is high demand in Malaysia and the fact that some Thai exporters want to avoid paying the state export tax of 900 baht ($20) for each ton of rubber exported.
