The reason the risk of BEAS not becoming a gorilla might be reduced has to do with the likelihood that its app server will be adopted as the industry standard. Given the number of application servers out there and their shifting market shares, is there any evidence at all that the application server market is a gorilla game? I sure don't see any vendor who has a controllable technology advantage over all the others.

As more customers request (require) J2EE compliance of their app servers, what will justify the hefty price that BEA charges for their products? I think BEA has overshot much of the market in performance and functionality, in pursuit of big name customers with deep pockets. As other vendors (even open source solutions) begin to meet the needs of customers on the lower end of market, what's to stop them from attacking BEA from below? I think the app server and enterprise tools space will get very interesting in the next few years. Dennis
