Regulators green light Casino Data sale to Aristocrat LOS ANGELES, June 6 (Reuters) - Nevada gaming officials on Wednesday gave preliminary approval for Aristocrat Leisure Ltd.'s <ALL.AX> $180.5 million purchase of Casino Data Systems <CSDS.O>, giving the Australian gaming giant a strategic foothold into the lucrative Nevada gaming market. The Nevada Gaming Control Board recommended approval of the sale at its monthly meeting in Carson City. The state's Gaming Commission will take up the matter at its meeting on June 21, but it usually follows the Control Board's recommendation. The tentative approval marks the latest in a recent string of advances for Aristocrat, which had sought a Nevada gaming license for years before finally receiving one last August. Earlier this year, the company also won approval from Nevada gaming regulators to sell its first slot machine in the state. The purchase of Casino Data Systems -- which posted 2000 revenues of $78.6 million -- will give Aristocrat major new ammunition for its foray into Nevada, allowing it to take on such industry leaders as International Game Technology <IGT.N> and WMS Industries Inc. <WMS.N>. Gaming machine sales now total about 80,000 units a year in the United States, with the average machine selling for about $10,000, according to consulting firm Las Vegas Investment Advisors. However, some predict that annual sales could jump by as much as 75 percent over the next few years as casinos upgrade their floors to include a new generation of video slots that feature more graphics and more ways to win.
