Scott, you're making me think about things I hadn't thought about in a long time...

The alcholism and divorce rate among managers and senior staff (as well as partners) was very high. I can remember they used to have seminars for wives to teach them how to be married to Arthur!

In my day, I was a very good programmer. Therefore I was pegged to go and teach programming to the new 'pups' they had just hired.

They have this training school in St. Charles. On the lovely Fox River. Bizarre place. Bought out a girls college and converted it into a training center.

Anyway,I had to go for a week to get trained on how to train, then had to stay for 3 weeks to teach the pups. 4 solid weeks. Of having your every move monitored, evaluated, and tabulated. Not just the pups, mine, too. Just like the military.

The managing partner of my office was a very hard driving partner I had the opportunity to work for on one engagement. He could put curse words together in ways I had never imagined! He definately used intimidation as his management style. He was good at it. In his defense, after he beat you up (verbally, not physically), he'd teach you what you should have done. You'd learn.

Problem was, that set the tone for the office. All the up and coming managers (Partner wanna be's) tried to emulate his style. Oh, they were good at the intimidation part. Just not the teaching part!

Forehand wasn't a part of that office. Maybe he was later, I dunno. Joe was a good manager. They move people around so much, it's unbelievable. It's as if they're really testing your commitment to the firm.

Ah yes, old memories...
