ken,

if you type msconfig in the run box, that will open the system configuration utility. click the startup tab and you are presented with a list of all the applications that run on your computer, each and every time you turn it on, whether you know it or not.

if you selectively remove some or many of these apps, while it will not prevent the resource drain, at least you will have started the session with more resources and that may be enough to provide you with satisfactory performance.
