JL,

Believe what you want, but I suspect that Jefford's defection saved the Republican party. Had they proceeded along their radical course unhindered, the GOP would have been crushed in two years.

JL, UK is relevant. It says listen to the grass roots.
Labour or left has become centrist in the UK and can get votes and now the 2 main UK parties are like the democrats and republicans in many ways, but more centrist than the UK.

The lesson is pay attention to the grass roots and the Torys had lost that trust. Too much in the pockets of big biz and that is why they lost this election as well as the last one.(Torys are similar to republicans in being conservative).
The labor party stopped being just a semi commie workers union party and moved to the center.
They feel and job at $5 per hour is a bad job. they also feel a job at $50 per hour is a bad job. Both bad for the economy, although $50 is good for that one person it endangers that job as being to highly paid.

So they have tended to moderate the wage demands of those doing well and have helped those at the bottom. This alienated many unions but brought them center votes.
