Ken

You do seem to have something running in the background that is putting a severe strain on your resources.

In addition to the suggestions offered you might open the Resource Meter tool(should be in System tools)

Then bring up the Program Manager(Control+Alt+Delete)and start shutting down all programs you can run without one at a time checking with your Resource Meter each time to see what effect you are getting.

Perhaps reading the Fred Langa articles that were posted previously today might also might be of use.

Ken,

The following works with Windows 98.

Regarding your resource problem...here's the way to fix it.

Go to the "Start" button and click on it. Next, click on the "Run" button. Now, type in "msconfig" and click on "Ok".
A screen entitled "System Configuration Utility" will open. There will be a number of Tabs on the top of this screen. Click on the tab entitled "Startup". You'll see a list of of programs and some, if not all, will have a "Check" in front of the program's name.

The programs with a "Check" will always start when you Boot your computer. So, these programs are always running in the back ground and using up your System's Resources. If you uncheck those programs that are now checked, and then click on "Ok", you get a message that asks you to restart your computer. After you restart the computer, check your resources and you'll see that you now have more resources available.

A word of CAUTION. I suggest that you uncheck only those programs that you recognize and don't need started when you boot your computer. DON'T uncheck the following: System Tray, ScanRegistry, or any AntiVirus program that you want to auto start.

Let me know if this helped.

PS: Where I indicated that you should type in a command, don't use the Quote Marks as I showed in my discussion above.
