I refer mostly to their BIOS, and by extension MB, and other CPU components that are normally purchased on initial purchase of a Mac.

Apple has always had a closed model (the only time they licenced their BIOS was a half hearted effort). Their relationship with VARs has always been constrained, and the recent Apple store idea won't help that relationship any.

In the end, Apple tried to keep to much of the pie for themselves, and ended up getting a very small piece.
