<BTW, why was Mustang cancelled in the first place when it already taped-out in the 2nd half of 2000? >

Mustang was supposed to be the answer to P4. When AMD saw P4 numbers, they realized that T-bird was plenty enough for P4. At the same time they saw an opening in the mobile space with no mobile P4 on the horizon. At this point the decision to switch became obvious.

>It's really hard to understand the "logic" behind all these delays. I sincerely hope we don't have a similar story with the Hammer series.<

Although there are potential reasons for Sledgehammer delays, switching to the mobile market is not one of them. In the second half of 2002 AMD should be in the catbird seat with mobile Barton, so their will be no need for a mobile Hammer for some time. Unlike with Barton on the desktop versus Northwood, where MHz will sell regardless of power consumption, in the mobile market power consumption is critical. By the time mobile Barton ships, Intel's reputation for quoting the desktop MHz for processors that run slower on batteries will be firmly established, so buyers will be looking for the MHz while operating on batteries. When the battery operation speed grade of mobile Barton is compared to the battery operation speed grade of mobile P4, Barton based notebooks will win hands down.
