Joe, I was first introduced to Adventures of Ostop Bender Panikovoski long before most people on this thread were born! Yelf and Petrov, in 1930's, to pleased Stalin, and in critcim of NEP, wrote a couple of comedies, hero of which was Ostop Bender Pankivoski, a Russian Jew, and product of the NEP! He had a dream, to become a wealthy and , immigrate from Russia to Brazil! He was imagining himself in a white linen suit, panama hat, holding the arms of two Brazilian beauties and walking up and down the Rio sea front! The adventure starts at the end of the civil war, where he pretends to be a civil war veteran, and begs money in the villages! There starts a series of adventures that are portryed in the book, the Mystery of 12 Chairs, and in another gook called the Golden Pig! I don' know if the books were translated into English, but several years ago I came upon a movie made by Mel Brooks, based on the frist book. At the end he succeeds to makes a million rubbles in gold but can't spend the money since the NEP is ended and there is nothing to buy! So he tried to cross the Romanian border and gets robbed by the border guards of all his gold! Stop returns to Leningrad and becomes a janitor! amazon.com
