What I said was that the two "North" countries were not the equivalent of Hitler's Germany

Of course they weren't.

They were patterned after communist Russia, which was responsible for far more brutality and repression than Nazi Germany, both domestically and abroad.

nor did the conquering of S. Vietnam have the dire world consequences the Vietnam war hawks predicted.

I guess that would depend upon who you ask. You can ask the lady who cuts my hair and she would call you a idiot. Her entire family were left destitute after the communists took over and her father sent away for "re-education" for some 10 years before being freed.

But if you're referring to the "domino theory" not coming to pass, you probably can thank the growing rivalry between China and the USSR in Cambodia, as well as massive US aid to Thailand, for preventing the domino theory from coming to pass.

However, you might ask those 2 million Cambodians who were executed in Pol Pot's killing fields whether any dire consequences resulted from the communist victory in Vietnam. The odds are that most of them would have lived moderately happy and fulfilling lives had the US not abandoned Vietnam, or permitted the NVA and VC to utilize Cambodia as a base of operations.

But the fall of S. Vietnam did alter the balance of global power slightly because the Soviets were able to gain access to a deep water harbor that permitted them to project their power into the Indian Ocean.

This is similar to what the Chinese are trying to do by claiming the Spratly Islands. This would provide them control over the entire S. China Sea, which includes several significant trade routes.
