Chalu... We're supporting Taiwan because it is strategically located along a vital trade route, and because Taiwan has a counter claim over the Spratly's (along with the Philipines and several other nations, including mainland China).

There are allegedly some 7 billion barrels of oil suspected to lie under that region, which make it a pretty valuable chunk of ocean real estate. And since economic zones project 200 miles out from a nation's shoreline, except where they conflict with another 200 mile boundary, whoever owns the Spratlys can project 200 miles of economic control over the surrounding mineral wealth. This would ALSO effectively grant China control over the entire S. China sea and the accompanying trade routes that MANY nations depend upon.

So again, the principle may not always matter in how the US responds, but in the case of Asia, there are quite a few nations over there just a bit nervous about this waking dragon called China and the potential lack of US resolve. They haven't forgotten Vietnam and that display of American proclivity for being a fair weather friend and bailing when the chips are down.

Btw, Taiwan used to hold the permanent security council seat at the UN that China now holds. In exchange for opening China up, Nixon arranged to swap Taiwan out for the PRC on the security council.
