We've been-there-done-that for oil and gas, furriners, and (ad)venture capital. I just don't see where they can throw any money away. People have been fretting about their derivatives exposure for years, and they already did that by proxy with the LTCM syndicate. I guess the demise of Glass-Steagal opens up wonderful new vistas of exposure in reinsurance before a big earthquake or killer hurricane. Speaking of vistas, there is an interesting view from an apartment I will be occupying temporarily for a few weeks. Two of the largest buildings in downtown Sreepoat belonged to rival commercial banks that had done very well for over a century. The grand monuments were put up in the early Eighties, during the flush of the oil boom. Somebody even paid extra for one of them to be "postmodern". It's got a black core, on each side of which is superimposed a white shape that looks like a child's paper cut-out. The shape echoes the signature Art Deco outline of the bank's previous headquarters next door. So cute. Needless to say, both banks have been through a couple of rounds of "consolidation", after being pawed over in the grubby FDIC bin for soiled, "previously owned" banks. And any Old Shreveport families with trusts at those banks are SOL if they left original docs there and don't have certified copies. BankOne could give an aerial copulatory act that your grandmama was Queen of Cotillion. On a happier note, I can look down on a humbler neighborhood that once contained the bars and brothels that attracted Lead Belly out of the nearby cotton fields. Long after BankOne has been mismanaged into oblivion, people will know about "Fannin Street".
