Never heard of that one before, but very similar to my understanding of the phrase.

In the navy a "son of a gun" was regarded as special or lucky, because he (probably) had several hundred potential fathers who whould always look after his best interest. -g-

and yes he would have probably been born between the guns on a sailing vessel.
