Rick, the VIX, VXN and equity P/C ratio are all important parameters, each one by themselves, does not have extremely good predictive power, IMHO. If I remember correctly, late in 1999, just before the last gap of the bull market, the VIX was stagnant around 20. By the way, for the last few days, I have been unable to get to the half hourly summaries of options trading volume on the CBOE: cboe.com Does anyone have an alternative entry to that site and the CBOE in general?
