Oh, come on, guys. I responded to a cranky post with a cranky post. Mike Magee misses sometimes, but he's also broken a lot of big stories, often to be greeted with initial rampant badmouthing from the Intel faithful. I'll take Mike over Tony any day.

Tony,
RE:"While we all have our moments (and that certainly includes me!), I think Tony often makes very insightful posts and would hate to see him leave."

I agree, Tony is a very nice Guy. Rarely does he argue or call names and when he does it's tempered.
He seems to know a lot about servers etc.

Jim

Interesting email sent by an SI lurker:

I am very concerned about the relative disappearance of AMD products from the retail chains; however, I think the following scenario is plausible.

CPQ, DELL, HP, etc. had a severe inventory build up and severely reduced production to recover. Their AMD inventory quickly sold out, but the glut of Intel machines continued for awhile. As a result, the production of all machines, both AMD and Intel, was severely constrained while the nventory glut--now all Intel machines--cleared. Meanwhile, AMD began very strong marketing to SD shops to take up the slack.

I regularly read SI's moderated AMD thread but am not an SI member.

Bob

I noticed the same thing, and was relieved to see HP and Compaq 1.2 and 1.3GHZ machines back in volume at Circuit City and Best Buy recently. I continue to be reassured by the problems my VAR had getting high speed AMD CPUs last month.
