It is perfectly possible for religion to be cynically manipulated. To move from that to the certainty that that is all there is to it is a non sequitur. People seek to make sense of their lives, and religion is often the result. They particularly seek reassurance in the face of misfortune and death, that there is something to hope for. To say that they believe rather than know is not a very good basis for dismissal. In the absence of knowledge, it is perfectly acceptable to hold a belief. Besides, the proliferation of beliefs does not mean there is no god or true religion. It only means that which is right is not obvious. If we had a number of people guessing at the number of jelly beans in a jar, their guesses would vary, but some would be closer than others, and one might be exact, for all you know. Without positive knowledge, you cannot judge how well the guesses correlate........
