To: Hawkmoon who wrote (1828 ) 6/10/2001 9:01:45 PM From: Hawkmoon Respond to of 23908 The Rhetoric continues: Mofaz: Palestinians do not intend to halt terrorism By Itimjpost.com SHEFAYIM (June 11) - "We face a reality today in which we do not see a real intention on the part of the Palestinian Authority to stop the terrorism. We do not see any real attempts to prevent [attacks] and no results, since the firing is continuing," Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz said yesterday. Speaking to pupils at the ORT High School in Shefayim, Mofaz termed the cease-fire as being used by the Palestinians "for show... to achieve political gains," with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat anxious to see what he would get in return. Mofaz said that, since the declaration of a unilateral cease-fire by Israel on May 22, 300 attacks had been carried out by Palestinians against Israeli civilians and the IDF, and the PA had released imprisoned terrorists. He added that it had been proven in recent days beyond a doubt that "the PA controls the level of the flames of terrorism." This only strengthens the belief that the violence launched by the Palestinians in September was part of a strategic decision by the PA. Mofaz said that there is cooperation among Tanzim, Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front, and Hizbullah. Since the beginning of the current violence in the territories, he added, 114 Israelis have been killed in some 5,500 attacks. He added that Israel has no interest in a regional deterioration of the situation and that it is important to maintain peace with Egypt and Jordan despite the fact that the PA would like to internationalize the conflict. ******************************* Now there are elements of truth and lies here. Arafat has lost any control that he previously had because 70% of all Palestinians now opine that it's OK for Palestinians to blow themselves amidst groups of unarmed civilians. Thus, right now, he really is completely unable to arrest and imprison all of those terrorists who he previously had incarcerated (20 of which died from PA torture, a fact Amnesty International conveniently ignores). Islamic extremism is being used in the same manner that Marxists used Bakunin and his anarchists to destabilize and destroy the system they were trying to replace with their own order. These extremists don't have the same goals as Arafat. They want to utterly destroy Israel and use the West Bank as their staging ground for a Jihad. They have no interest in obtaining a peace settlement with Israel that favors the Palestinian people because the destruction of Israel is the ultimate "peace" they seek to attain. And if Arafat gets in their way this time as he did previously, they will replace him now that political support is in their favor and they must strike while they hold this level of popular support for their goals. And Sharon know all this. In fact, I'm sure he knows full well that Arafat will not be able to prevent these extremist attacks and that international sentiment will increasingly turn to Israel's favor. The longer he holds to this unilater "cease-fire", the more pressure that will be on Arafat from the international community. The economic situation will grow more dire, draining support from Arafat, while raising the level of support for direct military action by groups like Hamas as the people become more desperate for anyone who can save them from their plight. Hamas will fan the flames of extremismist emotions with more attacks and provocations, proving their "power" and taking the entire Palestinian population down a road to outright conflict. And then the Israelis will one day, when they sense that they will have the approval (or at least indifference) of the world, send their tanks into the entire Palestinian Authority and strip everyone of their weapons, dethrone Arafat (or make him a political puppet). This is what Sharon seems to be waiting for... doing nothing that would undermine international political opinion, and giving the Palestinians and the uncontrollable extremists sufficient rope so that Sharon can hang them all.
