The Airport is nothing more than an IEEE802.11b access point. These have been available on the PC side for ages as well (D-Link, SMC, Cisco etc). You can buy PC-Cards, PCI boards for direct point to point networking, or access points for connection to a network backbone.

Bluetooth is a completely separate product that is not meant to compete in the same domain (though inevitably comparisons do arise for a variety of reasons).

The next desktop wireless push will likely be IEEE802.11a which will support 54 Mb/s data rates.

>>>About USB. My HP USB deskjet never did work with Win 98. I couldn't get it to install. So much for USB being there. Maybe it was the hardware. It was on an IBM Aptiva that came out before Win 98. It wasn't the printer, because the printer always worked fine with the Mac. And by the way, it worked fine with Win98 under Virtual PC on the Mac. But that uses a different USB driver than what's in Win 98. Go figure.

That's funny, I have a HP printer using USB and running Win98 and had no problems whatsoever. My hardware was kludged together pieces and parts. Just booted the PC; plugged in the printer; and, poof, new hardware recognized. Completed the installation as described in the manual. Go figure.

Your problem was probably the hardware (IBM Aptiva) which is why I prefer Wintel. I can choose which motherboard, processor, and peripherals I want.
