Not particularly off-topic because Japan is facing a tremendous deflation partially because of its declining tax base and aging population.

Japan's economy naturally has to reflect the growth of its work force because they are the heart of its consumer class, just as in any economy. The US is facing the retirement of its baby boomers, but we are mitigating that effect by importing more foreign labor who eventually become US citizens and make their life here, thus preserving the tax base.

Japan has never been known for encouraging cultural/racial dilution in its society. What will be interesting to observe is whether what NEC is limited to importing temporary labor with no rights of citizenship, or whether it indicates a broader trend to social diversification.

The latter is what is truly required to shake themselves out of their deflationary spiral. Either that, or the Japanese themselves encouraging large families.
