June 13, 2001 General Magic Announces magicTalk Enterprise Platform

Extends e-business with voice software suite architected on J2EE platform

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (June 13, 2001) - General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq: GMGC), a pioneer in enterprise voice software and services, today announced the magicTalk(tm) Enterprise Platform, the first ever software suite designed to extend the boundaries of e-business by enabling global 2000 businesses to rapidly build and deploy personalized, conversational, scenario-driven voice applications. Architected on the Java(tm) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE), the magicTalk Enterprise Platform leverages existing corporate technology and e-business infrastructure investments while reducing application development time. Early adopter trials of the magicTalk Enterprise Platform will be completed over the next quarter.

"Enterprises are quickly realizing that embracing a voice strategy will be as much a key to future success as implementing an Internet strategy has been to survival and growth over recent years," said Pat Haleftiras, chief technology officer of General Magic. "The magicTalk Enterprise Platform significantly accelerates voice application development and deployment for enterprises to add a "voice" channel- by providing a suite of voice software components that can quickly get them up and running with voice."

The magicTalk Enterprise Platform gives businesses an environment to quickly experience the benefits and power of conversational, personalized voice applications. These benefits include reduced customer service costs, expanded access to enterprise services by customers, consistent information and messaging across all distribution channels, enhanced customer satisfaction and loyalty, and new revenue opportunities for enterprises.

The magicTalk Enterprise Platform provides a high performance, highly scalable solution to add a conversational voice channel to e-business applications based on the J2EE platform. By enabling integration with existing personalization, scenario management and content management systems, customers using the magicTalk Enterprise Platform can, for the first time, create, manage and deploy innovative, dynamic conversational voice applications that provide superior customer service over any telephone.

"IBM shares General Magic's commitment to voice-enabling the enterprise, and that includes working with General Magic to move voice rapidly into mainstream enterprise applications using IBM's WebSphere Voice Server and DirectTalk in conjunction with the magicTalk Enterprise Platform" said Nigel Beck, director of marketing, IBM Voice Systems.

The magicTalk Enterprise Platform leverages the knowledge and experience accumulated by General Magic over the past five years designing highly scalable voice applications with the best user interface on the market, including, most recently, the award-winning OnStar Virtual Advisor voice application. The magicTalk Enterprise Platform builds upon the magicTalk Voice Gateway(tm) and includes J2EE integration components and VoiceXML dialog components for structuring and managing voice applications and delivering high-quality consistent voice user interfaces.
