Well, that is, of course, not the ultimate goal. I am sure you are aware of the remarkable success of 12 step programs. First, one has to admit one has a problem. But then, one has to call upon a Higher Power, however conceived, to help one turn the matter around. Suppose one had been a drunk who beat one's kids? Then one would, indeed, be a wretch, and if one had resolved to get free of drink, and failed over and over, a pretty abject one too. Acknowledging that, as the first step to healing, is a good thing. Sure, the idea has been extended to those who seem much better situated, but then, it seems to find a responsive chord in some people. Maybe they feel as if they need something more, and you do not........

That depends on whether or not he is an abject wretch. If it's true, then perhaps he has been afforded a great service. If it's not you might have a point.

Comparing ourselves, against ourselves, will never give us an accurate assessment. Only when we see ourselves in comparison to God, will we get an objective view of our true condition.
