There are so many kinds of bootstraps and harnesses. It is mind boggling. Thanks for helping with some fun. Seriously, aphorisms almost always have their basis in observed fact--often from the common man. They relate to the practical not the magical. Just as the insult, "go suck an egg" comes from the actual practice of sucking wild eggs in order to survive (not generally practiced since the advent of welfare). Naturally, anyone reduced to sucking eggs became an easy target of ridicule and mockery. People can be very cruel. CYA later, I'm off to the forest...
