Besides that, the chip itself costs only a few dozen $ in quantity. There is no way that the CPU would make up anywhere near the majority of the 1000$ price.

Seems like Compaq just did a better all around design, both in speed/functionality and aesthetics

Maybe you're joking, but I wouldn't hold HP's stock (disclosure - I have never owned HP's stock).

I have always liked their instrumentation products - but HP divested those - and kept the PC & Server & Printer & workstation business.

And they don't seem to have any unique advantages in any of these fields.
