Ever since I learned my dad bought his first real camera, a Nikon, on his way home from serving in the Korean War, I have had great respect for the Japanese.

GST I think you are right. Seems to me the young people in Japan are a lot more daring than their eldsrs are, to a degree of magnitude beyond the generational differences the US has seen.
