Do you believe the King and Queen of Spain, and the Spanish Inquisitors, were stupid or evil people? Or rather people sincere in their belief that what they were doing was right, and what Protestants, Jews and Muslims were doing was wrong, and that they were doing it in the name of God and the Holy Catholic Church?

That is, of course, an extreme example. But it illustrates a point. The greatest of evils is often times commited by those with the sincerest and best of intentions. It is not religion that is bad (and I never said it was, please note), but the implementation can be. I thought I had explained clearly and reasonably why religion is susceptible to such abuse. ABUSE being the operative word. I am not arguing for or against religion. Just trying to lay out what I thought was a rather non-controversial point.
