Close The major averages closed broadly lower though they did manage a late day push to close off today's worst levels. Equity weakness was due in part to developments overseas. Specifically, Japanese GDP contracted by 0.2%, versus consensus expectations for a 0.2% increase. This report was supportive of the contention that global economic weakness remains a concern and furthered concerns that the worst may not be behind the U.S. economy.
