Of course, different firms have different objectives, so the deal makes sens to both the buyer and seller.

Anglogold is a 7 million ounce producer, who wants to improve cash flow and profits, looking to eliminate three marginal mines that produce about 1 million ounces.

Harmony is a 2 million ounce producer who want to get bigger, owns properties adjacent to these mines, and might be able to do something with them Anglogold has not been able to. I wish Harmony well and hope that in addition to getting to produce 3+ million ounces, they produce cash flow and profits for shareholders.
