INTERVIEW-Global coal groups wrest market control from Japan
au.dailynews.yahoo.com

By Michael Byrnes

SYDNEY, June 6 (Reuters) - Global coal producers operating mainly from Australia had staged a
stunning win over the past year to take control of the world coal market from Japan for the first time,
industry analyst Gerard McCloskey said.

This had occurred amid a sudden surge in prices which seemed set to continue for the foreseeable
future, said McCloskey, chairman of The McCloskey Group and a convenor of the Coaltrans Asia
2001 conference here.

I've never known (producers) to have the power. Because of consolidation of ownership they have
control of the market now. It's difficult to see events which will take that power away from them," he
said in an interview.
